Dalgona Coffee & Matcha

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

So, I've mentioned before that coffee is something I adore. Like my other Gemini twin, I want my coffee in the morning to be dark and black, with very little or no sweetener. I consider Dalgona coffee, and any other coffee flavor, to be a dessert coffee.

There is a Korean craze for everything..isn't it amazing??!!! From K-drama to cosmetics to boy bands to girl bands to song and dance craze...and now, coffee. Dalgona coffee is a whipped coffee that originated in Macau but was popularized in Korea. My sister, niece and daughter are huge fans of Korean superstars since they are always on the cutting edge of pop culture with their innovative ideas.

Dalgona comes in a variety of forms and tastes, but in its most basic form it is a flavored, whipped cream that is added to your drink of choice.

Caffeine in my diet also comes from tea...I prefer my tea hot, and my favorite kind is green tea, especially Matcha. It has a mild, earthy flavor with a sense of freshness, and I enjoy it for both that and its antioxidant properties. Dalgona Matcha is a fantastic alternative for tea lovers who prefer tea to coffee. My daughter actually prefers this variety to the matcha lattes sold at Starbucks.

Your personal preference in coffee and milk is the most important factors in preparing this coffee. Since I only drink dark roast coffee, I used instant dark roast coffee in this recipe. However, as you probably well know, you may also use light or medium roast, and even decaf coffee will do the trick. White sugar and brown sugar both work, but I prefer the caramelly flavor that brown sugar provides. Sugar substitutes like monkfruit and stevia are also acceptable. Milk, of course!...milk of any kind; dairy, nondairy, sweetened, unsweetened, flavored, unflavored, hot, cold, etc.

In contrast to coffee, Dalgona matcha is served with whipped cream or coconut cream, depending on personal preference; my daughter favors the former. Heavy cream should be cold and whipped first before being adding matcha and sugar. When chilled, it's incredibly smooth, light, and satisfying. Matcha powder is used in both ceremonial and culinary contexts. The best quality matcha, known as Ceremonial, has such a delicate flavor that it is typically consumed on its own. Since its more robust flavor distinguishes itself when combined with other flavors, Culinary matcha is reserved for culinary purposes such as baking, lattes, and smoothies. Use the Culinary style if you want a perfect matcha on your drink.

So Dalgona it is...have your hand mixer ready...let's whip it...whip it good!

Equipment:

  • Hand mixer

Dalgona Coffee:

2 tbsp instant coffee

2 tbsp sugar (white or brown)

2 tbsp boiling water

1 cup milk (of your choice)

Pinch of cinnamon or cocoa bits for garnish

Let's Whip:

  • In a medium bowl, add coffee, sugar and water

  • Using a hand mixer, in high speed, mix until smooth (it will lighten in color)

  • Spoon on top of your preferred milk, garnish

  • Mix with straw and enjoy!

Dalgona Matcha:

1/2 tbsp Matcha powder (I used culinary)

2 tbsp powdered sugar

1/2 cup heavy whipping cream or coconut cream

1 cup milk (of your choice)

Let's Whip:

  • In a medium bowl, using a hand mixer, in high speed, whisk cold heavy whipping cream until it doubles in volume, fluffy and smooth

  • Whisk in matcha and sugar until well combined and smooth (it will lighten in color)

  • Spoon on top of your preferred milk

  • Mix with straw and enjoy!
