The very term conjures up images of Halloween for me. Although I find the name to be rather eerie, this cocktail has a long and storied past that has been the subject of much discussion and even many legends. According to one legend, Queen Mary Tudor of England earned the nickname "Bloody Mary" because of the carnage she allegedly inflicted during her five-year reign in the 16th century. In an advertisement for the Vodka firm in 1939, the performer is said to have stated that he had named the drink after his buddy Mary. Meanwhile, another tale claims that Jessel's name was inspired by the time he took a drink with Mary Brown Warburton, a well-known socialite. She was drinking a cocktail when she accidentally spilled it all over her white clothing, making it look like she was bleeding. The Bloody Mary's origins are open to debate, but its current status as one of the most popular cocktails in the world is not.
To get your day off to a rousing start, pair this spicy, flavorful, and alcoholic cocktail with some fried meat for brunch. With the brilliant red hue of tomato juice and the ghastly appearance of a Black Vodka, this recipe is a fantastic way to kick off your Halloween brunch.
Makes 1 serving
Ingredients:
1 teaspoon sea salt, or as needed
Ice cubes
¾ cup spicy tomato-vegetable juice cocktail
2 ounce black vodka (if you don't have Black Vodka, you can mix 1 drop of black food coloring to the Vodka)
2 dashes Worcestershire sauce
1 dash hot pepper sauce
salt and ground black pepper to taste
Let's Drink!
Pour salt onto a small plate. Moisten the rim of a glass with lemon wedge and press into the salt. Fill the glass with ice cubes.
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes, add vegetable juice cocktail, vodka, Worcestershire sauce, hot pepper sauce, salt, and pepper. Cover and shake until the outside of shaker has frosted.
Strain Bloody Mary into the prepared glass.
Shooters: Pour 2 ounces Bloody Mary mix into bottom of each glass. Cheers!
* For a Halloween and layered look, holding a spoon upside down over the top of the glass, slowly pour 1 ounce vodka over spoon into each glass.
