Pain Killer Cocktail

Updated: Sep 6, 2023

Adapted from Liquor.com

So the first time I tasted this drink was right after I visited my doctor due to days of backpains. Me and my husband went for a lunch date (since it was his birthday) and I spotted a "PAIN KILLER" in the drink menu and I knew I had to get one. But what really caught my attention was the caption beside its name..."limit 2 per customer"...what???!!!...what if I want 3? ...it must be fantastic!..I ordered...and it was sooooo good!...you may wonder "did it really relieve my pain?"...alright, it helped me forget about my discomfort for awhile...LOL! The phenomenon know as "the placebo effect" in scientific circles.

Mixing pineapple juice, coconut cream, and rum, the Pain Killer is a spin on the classic Pina Colada. Pina Colada is already a sweet and delicious drink, but when you add orange juice to it, it becomes more ideal for sipping on a hot and humid summer afternoon at the beach (or wherever else you want to enjoy a cocktail). The truth it, during our six-night Caribbean cruise, I consumed one of these cocktails every day.

Pusser's Rum Ltd. of the British Virgin Islands is famous for their pain killer cocktail. Although I recommend Pusser's Rum for this cocktail, I have found that other rums, such as Bacardi Aged Rum, work just as well in its place. You can use fresh orange juice, but not all oranges produce the intense sweet taste that is consistent with concentrated ones like Dole pineapple juice and Simply Orange juice. I used Coco Real, Cream of Coconut, which can be found in the same section of the grocery store as the cocktail mixes if you know where to look.

So go fetch your cocktail shaker and your dose of painkiller now (not for y/o below 21), and prepare yourself for a refreshing and pain-relieving drink that can give you that tipsy feeling. Enjoy!

Equipment:

  • Cocktail shaker

  • Cocktail jigger

Ingredients:

  • 2 oz Pusser’s rum (or rum of choice)

  • 4 oz pineapple juice

  • 1 oz orange juice

  • 1 oz cream of coconut

  • Freshly grated nutmeg, orange or pineapple wedge for garnish

  • Ice

Let's mix!

  • Put some ice on the cocktail shaker, then add rum, pineapple and orange juice, and coconut cream

  • Shake...shake...shake

  • Pour into your cocktail glass over crushed ice

  • Garnish and enjoy!
